The AI Brief #58 Claude voice voice AI assistant SMB automation Anthropic voice interface

Claude voice now available on Opus and Sonnet: finally a credible voice alternative

Rodrigue Le Gall | | 3 min read

Anthropic has just expanded its voice mode to Claude’s Opus and Sonnet versions, previously limited to Haiku. This is a significant shift: Opus and Sonnet are the models professionals actually use for complex tasks. Voice mode now works natively with Gmail, Slack, and Canva.

Why is this a turning point? Because until now, voice AI was treated as a secondary gimmick. OpenAI with ChatGPT, Google with Gemini: all offered voice capabilities, but on restricted models or as a demo feature. Anthropic is changing the game by giving access to its best models in voice form.

The context: companies are starting to automate calls, meeting notes, and document dictation. Until now, you had to choose between model power and voice fluency. This voice integration on Opus/Sonnet eliminates that trade-off. AI can now draft an email, reschedule a meeting, or analyze a document by speaking, without losing capability.

The risk: quality will depend on API latency and stability. And there’s the privacy question: your voice conversations will be processed by Anthropic.

What this means for your business

For a small business, this opens three concrete use cases: (1) automated voice customer greeting capable of qualifying requests, not just responding “press 1”; (2) smooth meeting note-taking through dictation, without transcribing afterward; (3) internal customer support for teams without keyboard access (field support, sales, logistics).

Adoption should remain cautious: you need to test integration with your tools (especially Gmail and Slack). Tech-forward SMBs will see immediate ROI. Others should ask themselves: do we have roles where voice would genuinely save time? Don’t deploy just because it’s new.
