The AI Brief #70 AI agents automated trading AI liability SMB operational risk

Autonomous AI agents in finance: who pays when things go wrong?

Rodrigue Le Gall | | 3 min read

Binance has just rolled out Agent OS, allowing users to let AI agents (ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor) automatically manage their trading positions. This is a watershed moment: for the first time, a major financial platform is handing real-time market decisions to AI without mandatory human oversight.

On the surface, the model is attractive. An average trader can theoretically automate their strategy and let it run 24/7. But Binance has been clear: responsibility lies with the user. In other words: you control it, you take the losses.

What really changes: this is the first time we’re seeing a complete abstraction layer between humans and financial action. The agent doesn’t “understand” the market. It optimizes an objective function. If market conditions shift (flash crash, liquidity dries up, model glitch), the agent keeps going. Prompt errors become massive trading errors.

For SMBs, it’s a signal: AI automation tools are arriving in high-stakes domains. If you use agents for critical business decisions (pricing, resource allocation, cash management), you face the same responsibility and drift risks. Who validates the agent’s decisions? Who covers the mistakes?

What this means for your business

For your business, two takeaways. First: delegating a financial or operational decision to an AI agent without human checkpoints means accepting that the agent can fail without a safety net. Binance is transparent about it: it’s your responsibility. Other tools will be too.

Second: AI agents aren’t “responsible” robots. They optimize a function. Change your prompt or your data, and behavior changes. Before deploying an agent for critical decisions (customer quotes, budget allocation, inventory management), test in a sandbox with explicit guardrails and a human in the loop.

The real question isn’t “is the agent smart enough?” It’s “if the agent makes a costly mistake, who absorbs it and how do we catch it before damage is done?”

ChatGPT can now send text messages for you

OpenAI is integrating text generation via an Apple Messages plugin. This is an example of what’s happening everywhere: AI is slipping into every interface frictionlessly. For SMBs: if your teams use ChatGPT, they’re already delegating communications. Set clear rules on who can use this type of automation and for what.
