The AI Brief #75 Anthropic Claude price reduction AI agents SMB

Anthropic slashes prices: Claude Fable 5.1 at -45% for agentic work

Rodrigue Le Gall | | 4 min read

Anthropic just launched Claude Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1, two models that directly address a growing frustration among customers: cost. Fable 5.1 delivers performance equal to or better than Fable 5, while costing 25% less for standard usage, and up to 45% less for autonomous agent tasks. That’s strategic.

This isn’t a typical price war. It’s Anthropic acknowledging that its previous models were too expensive for most small businesses. At the same time, the company has also loosened its safety guardrails (criticized as “overzealous” by customers) and improved its data retention policy—two major friction points for business applications.

The context: OpenAI dominates by volume, but Anthropic is positioning itself as the “more responsible, cheaper” alternative. This announcement also comes after autonomous AI agents proved problematic for security (an unreleased OpenAI model leaked on Hugging Face). So Anthropic is betting on a combination: cheaper models + safer = greater trust.

The risk for small businesses: rushing into these price cuts without genuinely reassessing which models fit your needs. Saving 45% on the wrong choice is still a bad deal.

What this means for your business

For a small business already using AI agents (or considering them), this 45% reduction on agent tasks significantly changes the economics. A customer support agent, order processing agent, or lead qualification agent now costs 45% less to run on Fable 5.1. That’s cash back in your pocket.

But watch out: it only makes sense if your use case is truly autonomous agents, not just a chatbot. Second, this price drop creates a window of opportunity: AI vendors (agencies, integrators, consultants) will likely trim their margins. Now is the time to renegotiate your contracts before the market settles.

Finally, fewer restrictions on AI means Fable 5.1 may be more direct in its responses—useful for business automation, potentially less so for customer-facing content. Test it before migrating your workflows to production.
